Mardi Gras may be over, but the Kings and Queens of
the Coast are working hard all year long. Gulfport’s very
own are shining bright on the basketball court. The Kings
and Queens of the Coast is a local Amateur Athletic Union
(AAU) basketball organization that coaches and trains
young athletes in their pursuit to become exceptional players. Robert Thomas and Michael Simpkins are co-founders of this program that is turning out nationally-ranked teams for boys and girls.
Currently, the 7th grade boys team is ranked second in the nation, and their program has several other teams that are playing at a very high level. When asked about the program's success, Thomas aid, “Our players and coaches put in the time. They work extremely hard, constantly practice, and have a high level of commitment.”
Both kids and parents sacrifice a lot of their time and energy to give the team and the sport all they’ve got. Because of the dedication of the coaches, kids, and parents, they’ve been able to play at a high level and see great results.
From 6th graders to seniors, they’re churning out talented and hardworking individuals. Some of their players are college bound and will be playing at the collegiate level for years to come. This program continues to grow and create opportunities for more and more young kids every year. Currently, they have over 80 players in their programs.
This story for these kids is just starting. Hopefully, we will see many of them go on to have illustrious careers in high school, college, and beyond. One thing is for sure: keep your eyes peeled for the Kings and Queens of the Coast because they are making big waves here in South Mississippi and in the nation at large.
