From field sports to eSports and from culinary to clay sculpture, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) has a summer camp to fit any camper. Camps are offered to ages ranging from six to 19 and begin in both June and July.
“We want to offer as wide a variety as possible so parents can find the camp that is just right for their children,” said Robert Weathers, coordinator of Wellness and Recreation at the college’s Jackson County Campus. “Our camps are not just fun; they are also educational. At our campus, we are offering Chemistry Camp, which allows campers to learn about chemistry while making some wild concoctions. It’s
a lot of fun. There’s also a robotics camp, which has a cool competition at the end. Kids really enjoy it!”
Daniel Calcote, fine arts instructor and Clay Camp leader at the Perkinston Campus, said the camp is fun in the mud. “Who doesn’t like getting their hands in mud and playing?” Calcote said. “The camp is geared toward those 14-19 in age, but no matter our age, we love to play in mud.”
Calcote said the camp allows campers to create something to take home. “Campers will work with clay using hand-building techniques, including building slab and coil forms,” he said. “They will also work on the potter’s wheel. All work created will be fired and glazed and will be theirs to take home.”
Other camps offered at the Perkinston Campus include basketball, baseball, soccer, and performing arts.
Jeff Johnson, coordinator of Recreation at the Harrison County Campus, said camps there include Basic and Intermediate Robotics, Culinary, eSports, and Video Gaming. “All of our camps are very popular, and some campers participate in more than one camp. No matter if you are more the gamer, science fan, or foodie, these camps are a load of fun with competitions and new things to learn. Don’t miss out on all the fun!”
