Three outstanding teenagers are part of the volunteer team making things happen for the Bacot McCarty Foundation. Katherine Herring and Mary Elizabeth Foster are both seniors at Resurrection Catholic High School, and Lexie Peters
is a senior at St. Patrick Catholic High School. All three have a heart for giving back to their community.
“The Bacot McCarty Foundation prides itself on helping to identify and cultivate young leaders,” says Executive Director Todd Trenchard. “The Terrific Teen program recognizes the best of
the best in South Mississippi and these young kids are sure to become our future leaders of tomorrow. Recognizing their contributions empowers them to do even more and encourages others to follow their example.”
Mary Elizabeth Foster’s plans after high school are to attend the University of Mississippi majoring in biology in hopes of attending dental school. “Eventually,
I hope to become an orthodontist and move back to my hometown, Pascagoula.”
Outside of school and extracurriculars, she enjoys taking dance classes and being a member of Melange Dance Company,
spending quality time with friends and family, going to the barrier islands, and doing service projects with members of Jeune Esprit Social Club.
“Volunteering with the Bacot McCarty Foundation has given me an amazing opportunity,” Foster says. “I have always wanted to give back to the beautiful community I was raised in, and volunteering with them gives me that opportunity.”
Katherine Herring has her future after high school all mapped out. In school
she likes chemistry and math classes and knew she wanted to do something in health care. “My mom, sister and aunt are nurses, but I didn’t want to do that and deal with blood,” she said. “I decided on pharmacy and have been accepted into Ole Miss Pharmacy School’s early entry program.”
Herring, who won the Distinguished Young Woman award for Pascagoula this year, knows the classes will be strict. It’s a concentrated program of courses that will allow her to enter professional graduate school after her junior year. “I’m not naturally smart. I have to study and put in the time,” she said.
Her list of high school achievements
indicate that she has indeed put in the time.
Lexie Peters is a talented dancer, and has danced at Jess Dance Studio for 15 years, competing since the age of nine. She is also very involved at her school, where she is one of the captains of the Irish Emeralds Dance Team and is involved in many different honor societies and clubs.
She began modeling recently and has modeled for Varsity Spirit, Cologne and Cotton Boutique, Sara Kate Boutique, Nella Home and Interior, to name a few.
As the Bacot McCarty Foundation’s Harrison County senior assistant, she also had the opportunity to model in their Renaissance the Runway fashion show fundraiser. “I loved being able to use
one of my passions to help people in the community,” she said.
She plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall and will be majoring in business with a minor in fashion merchandising.
