FROM THE editor’s desk
Before writing this letter, I flipped back through the pages of last year’s April edition. I remember writing it right as quarantine went into effect. It was such an uncertain time, but I can recall an unwavering hopefulness as well. Yes, we weren’t sure what life would look like in the upcoming weeks, months, and now a year, but we knew that we could get through it together as a community.
A year later, vaccines are making their rounds. Normalcy feels within arms reach, which is especially important for our young people who thrive in an in-person learning environment alongside their friends. We’re excited to again be able to offer private schools listings, and even a list of summer camps thanks to the amazing women at Gulf Coast Moms. In a time where everything changed quickly, I am so proud of the way our parents, teachers and students adapted to meet the needs of our children.
In addition, this year’s Kids Issue features at-home education tools, such as Mississippi Power’s Learn with Louie program and resources from our local museums. Also in
this section, read about Lynn Meadows Discovery Center’s WINGS program, the Aaron Jones Family Interactive Center, mom hacks, DIY science projects, and this year’s Terrific Teens.
This month’s Final Say author is Traci Kessler, principal
of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Elementary School. Her perspective on elementary education is uplifting and the perfect way to close out this issue.
