Joshua Grumme, a senior at Saint Stanislaus College, has been selected to attend the United States Naval Academy as part of the Class of 2024.
Admission to the US Naval Academy requires academic and social excellence, as students must be nominated for admission and fewer than half of those who qualify for attendance are o ered appointments.
Grumme is no stranger to the rigor required for admission and attendance. At Saint Stanislaus, he is a member of the National Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, and Quiz Bowl team.
However, Grumme doesn’t only excel when it comes to academics. For four years, he played saxophone in the advanced band, and he has received the Leonard Bernstein Musicianship award, which honors students whose musical contributions and dedication set them apart from their peers. He was selected as 1st chair honor band at Pearl River Community College in 2018. Grumme also participates on the varsity teams for
Saint Stanislaus for both sailing and swimming. He has competed as a part of state champion teams for both.
Grumme’s dedication and hard work are evident in his activities outside of Saint Stanislaus too.
In addition to competing with his school team, “I am
a certi ed US Sailing Level 1 instructor and teach the fundamentals of sailing to children and students of all ages throughout the year at the school and during the summer at Long Beach Yacht Club,” Grumme said.
He has been an altar server at his church since third grade, participates in the Big Brother program, and routinely spends his breaks from school volunteering. This past summer he spent time volunteering in Metuchen, New York, and over Thanksgiving working at a mission in Klagetoh, Arizona.
Obviously, helping those in need is a passion. “I enjoy helping others without being asked and have volunteered many hours feeding the homeless and helping the elderly with basic tasks needed around the home,” Grumme said.
Despite the challenges Grumme will face at the Naval Academy, it’s clear he is up to the task.
