AT NIGHT?
story courtesy of Karen M. Crews, DMD
Grinding and clenching of teeth during sleep is called bruxism and is fairly common in children; most grow out of it as their mouths mature and develop. In cases where grinding is a symptom of a larger problem, there can be damage to the permanent teeth and intervention may be necessary. Grinding can be caused by stress and anxiety due to an adverse life event or pressure at school. Other signs that bruxism may be present are complaints of tooth and jaw pain, especially in the morning.
As new teeth erupt, a child’s mouth is changing, which can cause teeth to clash in the natural bite and will usually be resolved with the arrival of the remaining permanent teeth. If it continues, orthodontic treatment can correctly align the teeth. Bruxism can also be a symptom of an airway obstruction if a child isn’t getting enough oxygen while sleeping. Bruxism is being recognized as an early sign of sleep apnea in children and adults. In this case, simply treating the grinding will not correct the problem. In fact, a night guard could further obstruct the airways and make the sleep apnea worse. Airway obstruction
in children can also be caused by large tonsils and/or adenoids and should be evaluated by an ENT Physician.
Snoring and mouth breathing are other signs there may be an airway problem, even in cases where there is no grinding or clenching. Medications as well as mood have been found to play a role in teeth grinding.
If you think your child may be grinding his or her teeth, share your concerns with your family dentist.
