Let’s Get Down to the Business of Lent

he days of Mardi Gras 2019 are drawing to a close. In fact, if you’re reading this after March 5, then we have moved out of Carnival Season and into
Lent. I enjoyed having a longer Mardi Gras this year. I’m not an expert on why Mardi Gras ends when it does other than it’s 40 days before Easter
and it has something to do with the lunar cycle.

But before we eat the final piece of king cake for the year, we can still get excited about
the fact that Mariah Carey is visiting the Coast in March. She’s playing a sold-out show at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino on March 2. This is a huge deal. The Cher concert on Feb. 2 at
the Mississippi Coast Coliseum was the second highest-grossing show the coliseum has hosted — second only to Pavarotti. Now, we follow up Cher with Mariah Carey. The music scene here is definitely one of my favorite things about living on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

to be the going rate in South Mississippi, you can get a plate of fried fish for yourself and the family and help a local church in the process. The Lenten Friday night fish fry is as a large part of our South Mississippi culture.

The thing I most look forward to in Lent is the Friday night fish fry. You can find a great fish fry at basically any Catholic parish along the Coast. You can check out the one at St. Rose
De Lima in Bay St. Louis, Holy Family Parish in Pass Christian, St. Thomas in Long Beach,
and St. John the Evangelist in Gulfport. If there’s a Catholic parish, then there’s a very good chance they will be serving fried fish on Fridays during Lent.
