Twenty minutes after settling in, several white tail does emerged to feed followed by a nice buck. Not what we were hunting, but encouraging nonetheless. As the sun sank in the west, the prospect of ending the day empty-handed loomed but we remained vigilant.
We continued to watch when three elk appeared from the tree line behind us. Brittany switched positions for a shot. She aimed the .338 caliber rifle and waited patiently for the largest elk to move into position. It didn’t take long before her shot rang out.
She was ready to take a second shot with this 650-pound animal but it dropped exactly where it stood. A perfect shot.
The lodge was the nicest I have ever stayed in and the service and food were first class. Only one problem: we now have 167 pounds of elk meat. Anyone have any good elk recipes to share?
