LETTER from the editor
No doubt everyone in South Mississippi is ready for spring. It officially begins later this month, but we tend to kick it off as soon as the calendar rolls over to March. We actually had some freezing weather this winter,
complete with ice and
frozen water pipes, that
makes us ready for the
seasonal change more
than ever.
FUN FACTS:
ST. PATRICK’S DAY
ST. PATRICK WAS NOT IRISH
He was, in fact, from Wales.
FIRST ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York in the 1760s.
WEAR BLUE
For many years, blue was the color most often associated
with St. Patrick. Green was considered unlucky. St. Patrick’s blue was considered symbolic of Ireland for many centuries and the Irish Presidential Standard is still blue.
THE CHICAGO GREEN RIVER
In Chicago every year, the Plumbers Local 110 union dyes the river “Kelly” green. The dye lasts for about five hours.
GUINNESS SALES
Guinness sales soar on
St. Patrick’s Day. Recent figures show that 5.5 million pints of the black stuff are downed around the world every day. On St. Patrick’s Day that figure is
doubled.
We salute spring with
our annual Home &
Garden special section.
It’s full of features and
sponsor profiles to get
your juices flowing for
home and landscaping
rejuvenation. Get
inspired by the story
about a Gautier home
that was re-purposed
to suit new owners; a
special paint named
for an Ocean Springs shop’s mascot; a selection of easy shrubs
to grow; and the serenity of adding a water garden to your landscape. Thanks to our special section sponsors: Elliott Homes, Fritz Development, Gant and Brown Premium Home Builders, Leah Watters Architecture and Ocean Springs Lumber.
Another way to welcome spring is with a beautiful Easter wreath that you can make for your front door or an inside wall. The colorful, clever design is explained in detail in the Leisure section.
In the People section, we shine the spotlight on the Biloxi Yacht Club’s first woman commodore and the 40th anniversary of the Hibernia Marching Society’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. Congratulations to both organizations on these milestones. It will be my honor to again serve as a judge for the March 17 St. Patrick’s parade in downtown Biloxi.
In addition to a golf story and a tale of elk hunting in the Sports & Outdoors section this month, there is a piece about an Ocean Springs woman who is a bowler extraordinaire. You have to read it to believe it.
Did you know the Coast now has its first Robo Bar? It’s located inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and we’ve got the scoop in the Dining section.
