HOME & GARDEN water gardens BROADEN
YOUR GARDENING HORIZONS
W hat can be more soothing and add natural beauty to
a landscape than a water garden? This visual interest can be added to large or small areas.
“Consider adding a fountain or patio bowl to add the relaxing sights and sounds of water to any area,” says Brian Treadaway, owner of South Mississippi Aquascapes. “Our pond and water garden designs provide a unique atmosphere to any outdoor living area. Everyone wants a water feature in their yard, they just don’t know it yet.”
A water feature can be elaborate or as simple as a garden in a tub. Mississippi State University horticulturist Gary Bachman said, “You can make a water garden in a tub or have a whole bunch
of water lilies in a pond — both are great.”
Some of the plants he recommends include Irises, Elephant Ears, all the Papyruses — King Tut, Prince Tut and Baby Tut — Horse Tail and Equisetum. “Some Irises are really good at the edge of a pond,” he said, “and Equisetum is a throw back to dinosaur times.”
Treadaway said, “In our busy, technology-driven world, it’s now more important than ever to enjoy a place of refuge where you can relax and unwind with family and friends. A water garden is perfect for that. Living the water feature lifestyle is about having an escape at home, a place that beckons you outdoors where the stress of the day melts away.”
He adds that an Aquascape ecosystem
pond approach is a backyard pond that is low maintenance and works with Mother Nature. Aquatic plants are an essential component of every balanced water feature. Not only do they provide beauty, but they also help to balance the pond ecosystem. They naturalize the water feature while providing shelter and shade for aquatic creatures.
South Mississippi Aquascapes installs and maintains water features, including decorative fountains, ecosystem ponds and pondless waterfall streams.
