How can you be a fan of the Southern po-boy and not know of Pirate’s Cove in Pass Christian? It doesn’t seem possible. Pirate’s Cove has been a Pass institution for more than thirty years and is famous from one end of the Coast to the other.
If you are not a local, you may not know that the po-boy originated in New Orleans, just over sixty miles to the West. The story goes that the street car workers went on strike, and a local restaurateur took pity on the cold and hungry strikers, making sandwiches for the “poor-boys” with French bread and cold cuts.
That was an incalculable number of baguettes ago and this amazing sandwich has been taken to heights the poor strikers could never have
imagined. The first time you order a po-boy may be a bit confusing, as you are most certainly going to be asked if you want it “dressed.” Dressed means nothing more than adding lettuce, tomato and pickles. The gourmand will also insist that his po-boy be pressed, or toasted in something like a panini press. Interestingly, some people
think the tradition of pressing a po- boy originated in Biloxi’s once famed Rossetti’s Restaurant.
With the original location of Pirate’s Cove lost in Hurricane Katrina, a temporary location made do until
rather recently. The new, permanent location on Menge Avenue has been well received. This is a barebones kind of place — no frills, just counter service,
