Following Beagles is More Challenging Than it Looks

Across the pine savanna of the DeSoto National Forest, unseen dogs began howling as they jumped another
cottontail. Despite wearing heavy canvas “brush pants,” I could barely move through
thick underbrush punctuated by briars as I tried to position myself for a better shot. “Look out. He’s running your way. Get
ready,” another hunter yelled.
I braced for action, staring intently in the
direction of the howling dogs and anticipating a rabbit bursting from cover at any moment.
Instead, I heard something behind me. I turned and looked just quickly enough to see a speedy
brown object disappear into tall weeds.
