“When I was diagnosed, I was told I wouldn’t make it to my next birthday. Now, except for the primary tumor site, I’m cancer free.” -Kenneth Yeomans, Former Memorial Cancer Center Patient
Being able to receive his treatments close to home made a huge difference in
his quality of life. Instead
of having to drive several hours for treatment and then be driven several hours back home afterward, Yeomans only needs to spend 20 minutes in the car each way and can immediately head to bed to recuperate. The nurses and other staff made him feel like part of the family and were always ready with a hug and a smile.
“When I was diagnosed, I was told I wouldn’t make
it to my next birthday [in June],” Yeomans said. “Now, except for the primary tumor site, I’m cancer free.”
Care is more than just
medical treatments. Wrap-around services include nutritional support with a certified oncology nutritionist, support groups, the Nurse Navigator program and the Cancer Resource Center. The Nurse Navigator program provides support and guidance for patients and their families to help with a variety of challenges including transportation, patient education, and appointment scheduling. The Cancer Resource Center connects patients to prostheses, wigs and other supplies, as well as offering transportation for local patients and hotel accommodations for out-of-town patients. The Cancer Resource Center’s valuable work is made possible by Memorial Hospital Foundation, Memorial Hospital
Auxiliary, local charitable organizations, and the American Cancer Society.
The Cancer Center boasts some of the latest technology in treating a vast array of cancers, including treatments unique to Memorial. CyberKnife® and TrueBeamTM, for example, are radiation accelerators that use a computer-controlled robotic arm to fire high energy rays from multiple angles and directions to precisely target and destroy cancer cells. Robotic assisted surgery at Memorial using the Da Vinci Xi system is minimally invasive with less pain, fewer complications, and faster recovery for patients. Patients can also participate
in clinical trials through Louisiana State University School of Medicine.
Memorial Cancer Center strives to provide the best possible care to patients across the Coast and beyond. As a city/county-owned, not-for-profit facility, all revenues are put back into the hospital to provide better technology, more specialists, and locations convenient to Coast residents.
