Barney Hill, owner of the Blow Fly Inn in Gulfport, said he wanted to return the restaurant located on Bayou Bernard to its glory days.
He purchased the restaurant in July 2017 and set about hiring some longtime cooks and staff who had left the eatery during one of its many turnovers in the past few years.
“The Blow Fly has a lot of history on the Coast and we wanted to bring it back with the original recipes and a few of our own,” he said.
The Blow Fly Inn is back — again — and so are the plastic blow flies on the tables, which have a history going back to the 1940s and ‘50s when the Evans brothers owned competing restaurants. Other favorites returning include the secret recipe gumbo and
the whole stuffed flounder, which was featured on the Food Network’s Diners Drive-ins and Dives. “The flounder is still one of our best- selling dishes; people love it,” he said.
Hill says the Blow Fly also sells
a lot of fried green tomatoes topped with lump crab meat or crawfish. The tomatoes are hand sliced and hand breaded in a slightly spicy coating. The appetizer portion is large, so if you’re dining alone, you will probably be taking some of it home. The crab meat topping, which is only crab meat and no breading, is plentiful.
