New trends can often come into play as a disturbance, disrupting the way things were previously done. Deva Curl, a product line targeted towards women with naturally textured, wavy and curly hair, came on the scene in 2002, but has recently started gaining mass popularity.
“For more than a decade, people have been going to great lengths to straighten their natural hair texture,” says Chuck Kelly, owner of Chuck Kelly Salon Spa. “From flat irons to keratin straightening treatments and serums, they have attempted to achieve straight hair.”
Products like Deva Curl are helping people embrace their natural textures rather than fighting them. “Deva Curl combines a wide variety of low-to-no- lather cleansers, conditioners, masques, gels and pairs with an in-salon training program,” Kelly said. “Stylists learn a proprietary shampoo and dry cutting process that shapes the hair in its natural state. No more guessing where the hair will live when it shrinks.” According to Kelly, what makes the Deva Curl products so beneficial for curly hair is that they address the
main concerns for that specific hair
type. “Naturally wavy and curly
hair is chronically thirsty,” he said. “Traditional cleansers can rob textured hair of much needed moisture and weight. Deva Curl’s shampoos cleanse without stripping away natural oils that curly hair so desperately needs.”
Chuck Kelly Salon Spa not only carries the entire line, but is one of only a handful of Deva Cut certified salons
in the region. The certification process involves a full day of intense in-salon product knowledge classes as well as hands-on training in how to properly shape textured hair.
“The Deva method flips the typical ‘shampoo first, cut second’ process around. Instead, guests are encouraged to arrive in salon with their hair styled in its natural textured state. Our stylists shape the hair dry, sectioning and cutting with their hands and shears only, no comb,” Kelly said. “After the cut, the hair is cleansed, hydrated, and ribboned by hand in the shampoo bowl to dramatically decrease frizz during the blow dry process.”
Kelly’s clients have seen a marked improvement in the texture and health of their hair, often seeing their curls full of life for the very first time.
