All brides are beautiful on their wedding day and hair and makeup play a major role. The message from stylists at the Chuck Kelly Salon Spa is to keep that look traditional.
“Trends come and go, but when a bride looks back at her wedding photos in 20 years, the hair style should be timeless and
not look dated,” says owner/stylist Chuck Kelly. “It’s okay to give a nod to a trend but the look should still have a classic feel.”
Kelly suggests that brides choose their dresses first. Then the hair should compliment and not compete with the style of the dress. “The neckline of the dress is a major consideration,” he said. “If the dress has a higher neckline and more detail, the hair should go up. If it has a plunging neckline, the hair can hang down.”
Stylist Courtney Meyers jokingly corrects Kelly, “No, not the dress first. Hopefully, the right man is chosen first.”
Both stylists recommend that the wedding hair style should be chosen before accessories such as hair pieces, earrings and necklaces.
“The best advice I can offer is for a bride to listen to herself,” Kelly said. “Weddings can be stressful and a bride gets a lot of input. That’s why she should quiet all that noise and listen to herself.”
In addition to the style of the dress, points to consider when choosing a wedding day hair style include the texture of the bride’s hair and the time of year. Different styles work best for different types of hair. And in South Mississippi, the hot, humid weather is a big factor. “The up hair styles last longer in the hot, humid months,” Meyers said. “May and October are good months for weddings here — hair wise. It’s something to think about.”
She also stresses that hair extensions can be added relatively inexpensively to increase the hair’s volume.
For the bride’s nails and makeup, the traditional theme also applies. “We recommend that brides keep it more natural although they may want to make the eyes more dramatic so they show up in the photos,” said stylist Bree

Jacobs. “But you don’t want to do too much and have it look overdone.”
All three say brides should come in for a trial hair and makeup session before the big day. And they stress to be sure to bring the veil (if there is one), jewelry that will be worn and at least a photo of the dress.
