some schools do. And they welcome us with open arms.”
Speaking of the students, Franklin talks with
a smile in his voice. The business is obviously a source of joy for him. “Our most popular flavor is called Tiger’s Blood,” he says when asked what the children like to order. “We do a lot of business with schools, festivals, churches and birthday parties. Ninety percent of the kids want to taste Tiger’s Blood as their first choice. It’s a combination of cherry with a hint of coconut, and it’s bright red. That’s the number one seller.”
Along with the shaved ice, Kona Ice offers ice cream and, in the winter, hot cocoa. Franklin is quick to add that they also have a healthy menu with less sugar, which fits with the healthier
direction that schools are moving towards.
In 2015, Franklin estimates that he gave $10,000
back to the schools, and that is just the start. “I’m looking to give a disabled veteran a full-time job to help supplement his or her income,” he said when asked where he wants to go in 2016.
“I came to Mississippi in August of ’91 on vacation and never left,” he said. That’s when he met his wife, Angela, a teacher in the Biloxi school system. The Coast is home for him now, and he wants to make sure the community stays strong and vibrant.
