GIVING BACK
Building Communities One Home at a Time
story by Cheri Ward photos courtesy of Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast
Every family needs a strong foundation to build a better future and sometimes that means reaching out for a helping hand.
Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast has lent countless hands to help people by providing the tools and resources to create a brighter, more stable tomorrow for themselves and their loved ones.
And the nonprofit housing organization is no stranger to the Gulf Coast and
has been partnering with community organizations in Harrison, Jackson, and Stone counties since the early 1980s. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside local, national, and
global volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage after they move in.
The organization’s collective vision is simple – a world where everyone has
a decent place to live. But that’s not
all Habitat does for the Gulf Coast communities. You’ll also find financial education classes that are free to the public and provides affordable housing solutions to qualified participants. In addition to new construction, Habitat also renovates existing homes and helps people repair and improve their own homes and neighborhoods.
The Habitat’s Disaster Response has worked closely with local leaders to help with a variety of housing needs after
natural disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Zeta and helped to build the coastal communities back even stronger.
Through donations, Habitat offers opportunities that empower the community to create lasting and sustainable change. You can also donate new or gently used items to a Habitat ReStore by calling 866.434.7587.
