The United Way for Jackson & George Counties is going strong. Their campaign theme this year is “Give. Advocate. Volunteer.”
“Through generous donations, payroll deductions and other fundraising efforts, United Way for Jackson & George Counties invests in our local community,” says President and CEO Tee McCovey. “Your campaign contributions help fund the programs and services of our 17 local agencies. United Way is able to assist those in need, from financial assistance and counseling to those seeking a safe refuge to self-development, United Way is there with a hand up. Our community strengthens, grows and prospers as you give, advocate and volunteer.”
Founded in 1960, United Way for Jackson & George Counties now estimates that their services directly touch the lives of one in every three persons in the two-county area. It began as a private not-for-profit organization known as the United Fund. The original charter was inspired by a study gauging human needs in the community sponsored by the Pascagoula and Moss Point Chambers of Commerce. The new organization’s first fund-raising campaign was conducted in 1959 to fund 10 health and human services agencies in Jackson County.
“United Way has remained true to its mission over its 64-year history, growing from an agency primarily devoted to fund raising to helping close the gap of the unmet needs in the community,” McCovey said. “As our population grows and changes, United Way continues to lead the way for people to join together to help one another and build even stronger, more caring communities for all of us.”
United Way for Jackson & George Counties partners with agencies with multiple service programs. Additionally, United Way provides grant funding, gifts-in-kind, nonprofit training, consultation and other support services to a host of local public and private nonprofit social service agencies.
United Way for Jackson & George Counties funds 19 health and human service agencies with programs in the local community. By giving to United Way, you are helping friends, families and neighbors in our community succeed in life and receive help when they need it most.
