 GIVING BACK
K&J Foundation story by Victoria Snyder photos courtesy of K&J Foundation
On November 14, 2006, the lives of Brian and Yvette Pearse were changed forever. Their two children, Kiara and Jameel were killed in a car accident on their way home from school at Harrison Central High School. Kiara was only 17, while Jameel was only 15.
In 2008, the couple decided to found K&J Foundation in memory of their children. Its mission is to save lives and prevent injuries by encouraging teen safety awareness.
Since the creation of the foundation, the Pearses have spoken at a multitude of schools across the Coast to spread their message and tell their story. Through various media campaigns in southern states, the couple is trying to implement changes in people’s lives.
Not only does the nonprofit educate on vehicle occupant protection, but it also awards scholarships to deserving students in the community.
Every year, the foundation raises money to give out four $500 scholarships to college-bound Harrison County students. After college, Kiara wanted to own a childcare center, while Jameel wanted to produce music. They hope that these scholarships help young adults in fulfilling their dreams.
Every year, K&J Foundation holds a Butterfly Release fundraiser to raise money for the scholarship. You can sponsor a butterfly to be released, you
can release your own butterfly, or they can find a volunteer to release a butterfly for you.
For more information on car seat safety, seat belt safety, and necessary teen driving skills, you can visit their website.
Remember: no matter your age, the simple act of buckling up when you get in the car can save your life.
