When school closures were abruptly announced, children were broken of their normal routines and put into positions where they had to adapt and adjust quickly. Still, one thing remained constant – Boys & Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast’s (BGCGC) commitment to children and families on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. From serving meals, o ering childcare to essential workers, virtual programming, summer camp, and now a Virtual Education Hub and after-school program, their mission “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and
responsible citizens” has not wavered.
Many parents are still hesitant to send their children
back into spaces such as after-school care programs. However, stress, loneliness, and lack of appropriate exercise are issues impacting many children’s mental and physical health. BGCGC’s specialized programs in S.T.E.A.M., creative arts, and sports allow young people to exercise their minds and bodies in a safe environment. Plus, children do not have to attend the Club daily to participate in these programs. Programs include:
