Gulf Coast Cryotherapy is giving its clients a chill and seeing great results. Open for just over a year,
the center offers clients a state-of-the art cryotherapy chamber as well as NormaTec compression therapy.
The cryo chamber, once cooled, reaches below freezing temperatures, some as cold as negative 240 degrees. Clients enter the chamber with gloves and slippers and little else
as cold air blows over the surface
of the skin for up to three minutes encouraging blood to rush from the skin and muscles to the vital organs while releasing toxins. The Japanese originally began harvesting cold energy for arthritis and autoimmune diseases in the late 70s.
Cryotherapy boasts a long list of benefits including sharpening mental clarity, helping with depression, anxiety and sleep and boosting metabolism. “We have a lot of people use cryotherapy for weight loss,” says Angie Troutman, assistant manager. “One three-minute cryo session burns 500-800 calories.”
Troutman says the center is seeing cross fit and martial arts athletes who’re on a strict diet and workout regimen lose weight thanks to their cryotherapy sessions.
Older adults are using cryotherapy too. Troutman’s oldest client is 84 and uses the cryo chamber to relieve extreme osteoarthritis. The extreme cold temperature boosts the client’s white blood cell count thus reducing inflammation and pain.
“We also have 60-70 year olds who are using this therapy for their skin,” adds Troutman. “They are finding the cold temperatures slough off old skin and regenerate new skin, and they feel that their skin is tightening with the cold therapy.”
For those not ready to brave the frigid temperatures of the cryo chamber, NormaTec therapy helps athletes recover faster from injuries. NormaTec uses pulsing action and pressure in compression sleeves to move fluids and metabolites out of limbs and is mainly used for arm, leg and hip injuries.
Gulf Coast Cryotherpay and Recovery also offers B-12 shots
for energy and two IV solutions to help patients — one just saline for improved hydration and the other with water and fat-soluble vitamins.
Normatec Compression therapy is popular with athletes.
