LETTERS to the editor
LETTER from the editor
Happy Holidays as we roll into the busy month of December. There is no shortage of things to do to celebrate the season and bring another year to a close, as evidenced by the listings on our Calendar of Events.
There are two special sections in this month’s magazine — the Mississippi Bicentennial and Giving
Back. We celebrate the state’s 200th
birthday by spotlighting the history
The Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce-Main Street-Tourism Bureau and board of directors want to once again “thank you” for partnering with us for this year’s Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival that was held for November 4 & 5 in downtown Ocean Springs.

of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties and several legacy businesses. There’s also a historical story about the importance of the seafood industry to the area, and a piece that highlights the Coast’s wealth of ethnic names.
It’s the fourth year we’ve featured a Giving Back section, so appropriate for this time of year. We are able to do so thanks to generous advertisers. In addition to sponsored stories about many non-profit organizations, we have a list of area charities
that’s complete with addresses, websites, phone numbers and contact names. That makes it easy to make contributions or become a volunteer.

The Coast Notes section in the front of the magazine has a piece about the laying of wreaths at the Biloxi National Cemetery. What a beautiful way to honor these veterans! Three community minded individuals formed the organization responsible for this annual remembrance and hundreds of volunteers come out the first Saturday of December to place the wreaths. Last year there were 2,000 volunteers.
Julian Brunt provides some yummy recipes for a brunch, along with a restaurant review of Thirty-Two at the IP Casino Resort Spa in this month’s Dining section.
Fishing takes center stage in the Sports & Outdoors section as retired publisher Ricky Mathews relates the joy of fishing with his sons, and Frank Wilem details the excitement of taking a professional football player fishing for redfish.
If it’s the holiday season, it’s also flu season. Susan Ruddiman takes a look at getting flu shots in the Healthy Living section. There’s also a piece on the latest procedure of using real cold temperatures to treat certain conditions.
In the Home section we feature two holiday houses rather than just one. It’s always fun to see how people decorate for Christmas.
Seasons Greetings from everyone at South Mississippi Living
