Tooth sensitivity is anything from a twinge to severe discomfort when you eat hot, cold or sweet foods, and can be an early warning sign that you have a serious dental problem. Anyone, at any
age, can suffer from tooth sensitivity, but research shows that it is more common in women than men.
Sensitivity can be caused by a variety of things, including gum recession that results from brushing too hard along the gum line, gum disease resulting from lack of brushing and flossing and poor diet, dental erosion caused by gastric reflux or acids in food and drinks. Chipped teeth and dental cavities can also cause sensitivity.
Regular checkups and cleaning are the first step
to head off future problems. However, if you visit your dentist regularly have good oral hygiene and still experience tooth sensitivity, there are several treatment options available. Fluoride toothpaste, gels and varnishes can be prescribed as well as the application of desensitizing agents. This can take several visits, but will usually resolve the sensitivity.
Beach View Dental is prevention focused and can offer you numerous options to “seal and protect” your teeth. Call today to discuss how to prevent or relieve your dental sensitivity!
