I know, we’ve got miles and miles of beaches we
A NATURAL WONDER
can drive to right here on the Coast, but if you venture just a little farther beyond the shore, there are even more! Ship Island is a hidden gem that makes our Coast truly special. A day trip here isn’t just a beach getaway; it’s a journey through time, a wildlife adventure as well as a chance to bask in the sun.
Only about 12 miles offshore, Ship Island is accessible by an easy hour-long ferry ride from Gulfport. The ride out often offers passengers
a wonderful show as pods of playful dolphins
race alongside the boat, setting the tone for the adventurer’s day ahead. Once on the island, visitors are greeted by a stretch of pristine white sand beaches that rival those of our neighbors to the east.
The allure of Ship Island extends beyond its stunning beaches. The natural beauty
is complemented by its wildlife. As part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Ship Island is a haven for nature lovers.
Along the shoreline, you’ll spot a variety
of coastal birds. If you’ve got a keen eye, you’ll likely see more dolphins playing in the surf and maybe even a sea turtle or two. The island’s unspoiled environment offers
a unique opportunity to witness the Coast’s diverse ecosystem up close and personal.
If you’re seeking more than just a beach day, Ship Island’s interior features serene landscapes of dunes and salt marshes. Sandy trails invite visitors to explore and enjoy the island’s quieter side making it an excellent spot for a leisurely picnic, where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.
