HEALTHY LIVING
TAKE A
Deep Breath
story by Dr. Nickie Harris-Ray
You can never underestimate the satisfaction of inhaling a chest full of crisp, clean air and letting it out without restriction or cough. Easy breathing is especially important during this time of year when colds, sniffles, flu, and other respiratory conditions are plaguing every population.
Even a different variant of COVID, though fortunately not as virulent as
in the past, is actively making rounds. Those who have recently suffered know the satisfaction after recovery of the full appreciation of inhaling and exhaling without clogged nostrils or chest rattles. A functioning respiratory system is fundamental, and during October, we recognize Healthy Lung Month and the importance of this life-sustaining organ.
Healthy Lung Month is an annual recognition event promoting increased lung disease awareness. Many environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and genetic predispositions can contribute to your lung health. For example, being
restricted to contaminated indoor spaces that are confined and do not allow for adequate ventilation can cause a build- up of pollutants for inhalation. Also, outdoor air quality affects lung health and can lead to bronchitis, asthma attacks, respiratory issues, and, according to UAB Health System, premature mortality. Pollen contributes to air quality, even Saharan dust that crosses the ocean from Africa, and smoke/smog from large forest fires nationally and as far as Canada decrease air quality and cause lung issues.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lets us know that nicotine and smoking are some of the most detrimental contributors to all
aspects of health, especially lung health. Smoking can lead to lung disease by damaging airways, constricting blood vessels, and impairing alveoli functions. Most cases of lung cancer are caused by cigarette smoking. It also can cause chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Though many negative influences can plague lung health, simple changes can improve lung functioning. Many don’t know that as little as 30 minutes a day
of exercise can improve lung capacity and function overall. That is why campaigns like Healthy Lung Month are so important. More information can be found on the CDC website and through the American Lung Association.
