The biggest risk factors are gender, race and family history. Prostate cancer is relatively rare in men under 40, but the chance of being diagnosed rises significantly after age 50 and roughly two-thirds of prostate cancers are found in men over age 65. African American males have an even greater risk.
There are no symptoms of early stage prostate cancer. However, contact your doctor if you have any of the following:
the need to urinate frequently
difficulty urinating
painful or burning urination
loss of bladder control
numbness or pain in the hips, legs or feet erectile dysfunction
At your annual physical examination with your primary care provider, you should discuss risk factors and any symptom of prostate cancer you’ve had. Your provider may recommend you have a digital rectal exam or a prostate- specific antigen (PSA) test. These tests can detect cancer early and allow time for treatment.
