STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR
Thriving in Photography World
story by Alexis Williams photos by Savvy Snapshots
What started as a hobby while vacationing with her family has now turned into a thriving business for 22-year-old college student Savanna Jones. Jones, born and raised in Biloxi, began taking landscape photos while vacationing with her family. Eventually, she began asking her family and friends if they would be interested in modeling, and her photography business developed soon after.
In May 2018, she started Savvy Snapshots Photography. Although she doesn’t have a permanent studio, her coastal landscapes sell online and in several di erent shops along the Gulf Coast. Savvy Snapshots o ers

photography packages of all scopes and sizes and customizations are available. Jones has shot everything from landscapes to weddings and families and even senior portraits. Recently, she started wedding videography and has bookings for this part of her business later in the year.
Her photography has been featured in trade publications including Shutter Up Magazine, Shutter Scene Magazine and Color Shot Magazine.
Currently Jones is enrolled as a full- time student at USM Gulf Park Campus majoring in English and minoring in lm. Her photography business ts nicely into that schedule, as she works with clients on the weekends and in the afternoons. “I really want to work in journalism when I nish school, and this ts right along with that career path,” says Jones.
Although she enjoys all aspects of her business, her passion remains landscape
photography. “Lighthouses are my
favorite thing to photograph,” she adds. “Every sunset is really pretty and di erent. I also love boats, especially shrimp boats.”
Even at her young age, Jones sees the bene ts of being involved in the community and learning from others. She is a member of the Biloxi Bay
Area Chamber of Commerce and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Photography Club. Her young age and savvy technology skills have helped her develop her business on social media and online. Since launching a new website earlier this year, she is continually booking families from other parts of the country who visit the Mississippi Gulf Coast and want to have family portraits made on the beach. “Working without a studio I think is more unique because people get to pick their location and their background instead of a at background and alternate lighting,” she adds. “People underestimate how beautiful outdoor lighting and sunsets can be here. For me, I think that having the sky, the sunset and the subject all in focus draws more attention to the photo as a whole.”
