President Theodore Roosevelt visited Mississippi in 1902 to hunt bears and created a legend. Since the president found few bears, his guide captured a small one and tied it to a tree. The consummate sportsman, Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear on a rope. Reporters accompanying the expedition documented the incident, leading a toymaker to create a stu ed version of “Teddy’s bear,” which continues to delight children more than a century later.
