us with no luck despite Capt. Alex constantly moving so we could fish a number of points.
Then finally, I hooked a speck, but it wasn’t much of one.
In fact, it didn’t quite make the cut of even being legal, but this had to be a sign that our luck was about to change. When it didn’t, we ran to our place on Cat Island for lunch and a chance to swap more war stories.
Jeff likes to rodeo and is somewhat of a cattle baron who also hunts at his own place in the Carolinas and in New Mexico, Colorado, or on the 6,000-acre lease he shares in Texas with some friends. He enjoys hunting deer, elk, and even turkey. He bagged eight elk on nine hunts — not too shabby.
After lunch, with full stomachs and our high hopes restored, we headed out again. But our next ten thousand casts produced a mere two rat reds. That was it.
The fish were simply uncooperative and we headed back
for his afternoon Island View meet and greet with an empty fish box. Capt. Alex and I had really wanted to find Jeff a decent sized bull red. But that was not to be. Yet I had a great time getting to know a NASCAR legend and hearing the sort of stories that were perhaps not entirely appropriate for the public audience the night before.
