This year, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk celebrates its 25th anniversary. The Gulf Coast event, a noncompetitive 3.1 walk and 5k, is now in its 13th year and aims to raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Every year, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer brings people across the nation together to make a difference for everyone who has been touched by breast cancer. The events raise money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.
The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of the Mississippi Gulf Coast will
take place on October 20 and begin at the Biloxi Town Green. Registration starts at 7 a.m.
with the event to follow at 9. Individual and team registration is available online prior to the event.
“The walk is not timed and there is no fee to register or walk,”
said Community Development Manager Liz Gaulke. “Participants can walk or run and strollers are allowed. Bicycles and pets are not allowed for the safety of all participants.”
Those who prefer not to walk can still enjoy the events taking place on the Town Green, including music, Snowboogers treats, photos taken with Snaparrazi Photo Booth, visits to the AVON Pink Out/Beauty Tent and chair massage from Massage Envy. The Home Depot/Kohl’s Children’s
Tent will also have kid’s activities available throughout the morning, and games will be provided by Whataburger.
“After the walk, trophies will be presented in the categories of Best Team T-Shirt, Best Decorated Pink Cape, Largest Team, Registered Online and In Attendance and the Best Fundraising Team prior to October 20,” Gaulke said. “There will be two categories for the Best Decorated Cape. One trophy will be awarded for the best Children’s cape up to age 12 and a trophy for the best Teen/Adult cape, ages 13 and above.”
From the opening ceremony
to the post-walk entertainment, a Making Strides event is a celebration of survivors and opportunity to remember loved- ones lost.
