SPORTS & OUTDOORS
GEARING UP FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES DURING WINTER WEATHER

On the Gulf Coast, we often enjoy fairly mild temperatures and many beautiful days during the winter. However, sportsmen heading out to fish or hunt in January sometimes face stinging temperatures intensified by swirling winds, cold rain and possibly, but rarely, ice, sleet and snow.
A sportsman’s worse nightmare, hypothermia can strike in temperatures as high as 60 degrees. As it progresses, hypothermia, or lowering the core body temperature, can cause disorientation, slurring of speech and hamper one’s ability to make decisions. Wetness or wind rapidly exacerbates the effects. A person immersed in 40-degree water can lose consciousness in 15 minutes and die in 90.
