Sewell said new listeners should start
at the beginning with episode one “The Most Southern Thing...” to get an idea of what the podcast is all about and added, “All of the podcasts can stand alone, but the first one really gives you an idea who we are and what it's about.”
The first podcast is peppered just right with southern memories of owning a
pet alligator as a kid, camouflage fishing waders monogrammed with bright pink initials, and receiving an entire butchered pig as a Christmas gift from the in-laws. Hornsby added the four-part series “From Mississippi Will Travel” in season four is also a must-listen and there are plans for it to be a reoccurring segment.
“I just feel like those told and will continue to tell a different story about Mississippi,” Hornsby said. “There’s such a stigma with the socio-economic about Mississippi. This is about people that love where they are from, but have broken the mold and done some really extraordinary things.”
Hall said she recommends one of their most popular and beloved episodes, No. 11 “Books That Changed Our Lives” which they recorded in honor of Read Across America month. “And it’s not just about books we remember,” Hall said.
“It’s all about books that affected our childhood and our life. I’d really like to do more of these. Books really touch people and bring out a lot of memories for us and them.”
The podcast heavily features family
and diverse perspectives. Guests have included people with various backgrounds as well as the trio’s Maw Maws, moms, and mothers-in-law. There are even a couple of question-and-answer episodes featuring their husbands. Their fathers and other family members listen as well and all spicy episodes have a disclosure at the beginning to prevent awkward family gatherings.
“We warn all of our parents don’t listen to this,” the three said in simultaneous unison while laughing. Hall added with a giggle, “From there it’s up to them.”
So splash a drop or two of sweetened condensed milk in your coffee, pop some cinnamon rolls over yonder in that there oven, and check out these Coast girls at “Don’t Tell Maw Maw” anywhere you listen to your favorite podcasts.
