George Loukatos, M.D.
Q: How can I avoid getting the flu?
A: The best prevention is to get immunized with the flu shot. While immunization doesn’t guarantee that you won’t catch the flu, your symptoms will not be as severe and won’t last as long
if you do. You should also avoid contact with those known to be sick and practice good hand washing.
Q: Can I get the flu from the flu shot?
A: Absolutely not. The flu vaccine does not contain the flu virus. A small percentage of people may develop a low-grade fever and aches as their body builds up an immune response, but this will only last a day or two.

Q&A
with Dr. Loukatos
Q: Who is at risk to get the flu?
A: Everyone. Unless you live in a bubble, you’re at risk to catch the flu during flu season. That being said, those at highest risk for contracting the virus are health care workers, students, teachers, children in daycare, anyone working in closed quarters, and those with weak immune systems, such as the elderly, infants, and the chronically ill.
