Are you a Bubba Watson or John Daly, or do you challenge the gym like a Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson or Tiger Woods? Supposedly, Watson and Daly don’t work out very often, and some think Rory, DJ and Tiger work out too much.
F or a funny look at John Daly’s workout routine, search the web for Jocko Deal and John Daly.
Most would not recommend baiting an athlete with a cheeseburger at the treadmill’s front, and a french fry does not provide ample nourishment during an exercise session. Keeping fit on and off the golf course is important, and that’s no joke.
Brandel Chamblee questioned Rory’s regimen and pointed to Tiger’s physical problems. Later, when asked if he was going to do some squats today, Rory quipped, “Not yet, but I was planning to though. Maybe with Brandel on my back.” The point is simple: to each his own.
John Paul Guidry of Guidry Golf and Sport provides one-on-one training
for golfers and “The Ultimate Sports Rehabilitation” for athletes in any sport. The fitness guru and doctor of physical therapy serves St. Tammany Parish and the Mississippi Gulf Coast as a Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certified golf fitness specialist and an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS).
For healthy adults the Department
of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. Ditto for the Mayo Clinic, which recommends strength training
exercises for all major muscle groups
at least two times a week. “Aim to do
a single set of each exercise, using a weight or resistance level heavy enough to tire your muscles after about 12 to 15 repetitions.”
Golfers need more than just aerobics. According to Guidry, “The number one thing most adults need is strength and power training. Golf is first and foremost a game of skill, but if you are ignoring the fitness aspect, you are doing your health and your game a
big disservice.” Juniors profit as well. Karstyn Altese has reaped the benefits and will compete in Augusta next April at the Drive, Chip, and Putt.
Guidry added, “Regular exercise helps reduce heart
disease, diabetes,
some cancers,
depression,
and anxiety.” Put the hot dog down and find a trainer who will help add yards to your
drives and
life.
