Chef Matthew Waterman lives by
the creed of great family life equals great work life, and he practices this philosophy by cooking with his 12-year- old daughter Keirra and 10-year-old son Connor in his spare time, teaching them the importance of sustainability and the history of food.
He has been the chef at Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant since June 2019 and has worked in the restaurant industry for more than 30 years. The one thing he enjoys most about his profession is working side-by-side with people from all walks of life. He also likes that there
are so many ways to elevate a dish. “I love that I can create art through life’s equalizer – food,” Waterman said.
Waterman was born in Chicago and grew up in San Francisco, where he attended culinary school. He attended college at Florida State University in Tallahassee and has been on the Gulf Coast for the past 10 years. Living on the Gulf Coast has endeared him to fresh-caught seafood such as scallops and Opah, but he also enjoys dining on an amazing pork belly.
According to Waterman, working in the restaurant industry requires patience
and exibility. For someone just starting out, he recommends “asking a ton of questions and not being afraid to dive in and try for yourself.”
