Known as the “City of Discovery,” Ocean Springs has seen a boost in economic growth in recent months. With a population of nearly 18,000 and an annual calendar of events that brings nearly 500,000 visitors to the community each year, this little town knows how to shine.
“Our sales taxes have been
very high and, at times, record breaking,” says Mayor Shea Dobson. “We have contracted with Retail Coach, which is a retail
and development firm that is bringing more business. Hotel and lodging taxes continue to grow with additional hotel rooms being added.”
From the partnership with Retail Coach, the city has been able to identify properties that would be well suited for redevelopment, enhancing the business district from the west end to the east
end of the city limits. “Lately, construction can be seen all throughout the community. Tractor Supply led the way when it opened its doors on the east side of
town,” said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cynthia Dobbs Sutton.
The city recently completed
the Porter Avenue project which extends the entertainment
district, linking a major portion of downtown to the beach front. New additions include walking and bicycle paths for Ocean Springs residents.
“Ocean Springs thrives
on entrepreneurs and small businesses,” Dobson says. “Our downtown is full of amazing shops and restaurants for a great shopping experience. We also love our festivals and events. This town knows how to have fun and support our local organizations. Ocean Springs is not just a destination, it’s an experience.”
On Bienville Boulevard, a
new $10 million mixed-use development called The Inlet
will bring in new retail and residents. “The footprint includes 12,000 square feet of retail
space with nearly 100 condo units,” Sutton said. “The vacant
