In June of 2018, Mayor Billy Hewes threw out the ceremonial first pitch
at the Gulfport Sportsplex’s new $8.5 million state-of-the-art synthetic turf complex. The Sportsplex also added two international size soccer fields. This expansion has put the Gulfport Sportsplex as one of the largest sports complexes in the Southeast with 15 baseball and softball fields and six international size soccer fields.
“With the synthetic turf fields, teams and visitors can rest assured that

when they come to Gulfport they
will finish their tournaments without major weather delays or field prep,” Sportsplex spokesman Jase Payne said.
In 2018, the Sportsplex hosted more than 60 tournaments bringing over 100,000 visitors to Gulfport and the Coast with an estimated economic impact of $15 million. City officials are forecasting more than 125,000 visitors to the Sportsplex for 2019 as it continues to make waves in sports tourism across the Southeast.
