stand and noticed two dark forms that I was pretty sure hadn’t been there earlier. My suspicion proved accurate when I could see them moving — hogs. Since they eat pretty much everything and are fast breeders, most landowners want to harvest them whenever possible. While John is no exception, we were reluctant to take a shot and risk spooking the deer.
Before long, several spike bucks appeared in rapid succession. Then through the mist, we got a glimpse of a seven-point buck which, unfortunately, was too small. By mid-morning, we gave up and headed back to the ranch house for breakfast.
We spent the day hanging out with family and were still exploring their great place when it was time to head back to the deer stand. We settled in quickly and began watching over a large field that extended over 200 yards to the tree line on the far side.
As the sun sank low, several does emerged from
the woods. Then a small buck appeared to begin foraging. As we scanned the tree line on the far side,
a nice eight-point buck appeared out of the tree line. Cautiously, it approached the low fence line and easily leapt across into the field.
With her heart beating loud enough for me to actually hear — or nearly so — Britt patiently waited for a
good shot. In minutes that seemed like hours, the deer finally turned and Britt took the shot at just over 200 yards. It was a good shot, but the deer slowly ambled toward the fence line while Brittany had flashbacks of the last buck that vanished into the trees.
But a few seconds later, this deer was down, and Brittany had her first, verifiable buck.
