entertainment district. I am not sure who first had the idea of combining a blues music venue with good BBQ, but it is a fantastic idea. Has there ever been a music genre that fit so hand in glove with a culinary idea?
Pecan and hickory wood are used
for the smoke, but the real secret that produces this killer good BBQ is the dry rub, and don’t even think about asking for the recipe. There are also three BBQ sauces to select from — sweet, Carolina style vinegar, and spicy. Another ingredient that makes this place hum, according to general manager Iris Byrd, is the dedication to getting it right. “We’re cooking for friends,” Byrd told me with some pride.
Best sellers include pulled pork and chicken. Make sure to get the slaw as a topping for the pork. The Clarksdale, a sandwich made of chopped sirloin covered in cheese and bacon, and the ribs, which come in three sizes from a small portion to a whole rack, are also great choices.
A few other standouts include the house made smoked tuna dip, pulled pork nachos, famous wings. One of the most popular items on the menu is the burnt ends, a Kansas City BBQ specialty. They are the fatty pieces of brisket trimmed
to make it easier to slice and they are absolutely delicious. Because there
is only so much excess meat that can be trimmed off the end of the brisket, quantities are limited. Count yourself lucky if you can score one of these sandwiches.
Tuesday is pint night, 5 to 10 p.m.;
get $3 pints on any draft craft beer. Wednesday is wing night with 50 cent wings (Don’t be surprised if you hear someone say, “I love you like I love wing night.”) and Saturday and Sunday have game day specials, with 75 cent wings and $6 pitchers of PBR, plus sausage and cheese platters for $7.
On top of great food and specials,
you can enjoy live music Saturday and Sunday nights. If you get the BBQ bug, this is the place to go in Ocean Springs, and there is absolutely nothing murky about it!
