LETTER from the editor
Happy New Year! We human beings love new beginnings and fresh starts. It’s our chance to do better, improve, maybe learn something new. I guess that’s why the old year going out is depicted as an old bearded man, and the new year looks like a fresh, unsullied new baby.
Thank you very much for the support South Mississippi Living
gave to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the American Cancer Society (ACS). Your section highlighting cancer and the ACS was outstanding and much appreciated. We are thankful to you and your staff for the commitment you make to help fight cancer. Thank you.
LIZ GAULKE,
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
Thank you very much for helping us to further our mission of supporting people experiencing mental health challenges!

Starting off 2016 in the best spirit, we present — what
else? — weight loss stories in the Fitness section. These local people inspire
us by not just
losing weight,
but having real
transformations.
They graciously
share their
stories to
encourage
others. There’s
also a story
about good
nutrition in
this section.
Nutrition is
something
everyone can
do something
about. Fiscal
fitness is
another part
of the special
section and has
a story about raising money-smart kids.
We have three interesting stories in the Sports & Outdoor section: a review of the Shell Landing golf club, a salute
to Biloxian Made Good Mickey Bradley and a first person account of a duck hunting adventure by our new writer, Kyle Johnson.
Speaking of new, there’s a dining review of one of Gulfport’s newest restaurants, Corks & Cleaver, in the Dining section. Plus, read about Social Suppers, a new event sponsored by the Magnolia Business Alliance. It’s a real fun way to raise money for small business grants.
In the Healthy Living section, there’s a piece that’s a perfect tie-in with the Fitness section. It’s about local efforts to fight childhood obesity.
Want a few inexpensive tips to brighten your home during these sometimes-drab winter days? Two local designers have it covered, and their own homes light the way.
