COMMUNITY-DRIVEN CONSERVATION
From sandy beaches to serene bayous, Coastal Mississippi offers a multitude of ways to engage with our natural resources. Whether you are on the beach soaking up the sun or relaxing out on the rivers, bays, and bayous, ecotourism opportunities are available to aid in nourishing the environment and the soul!
With 62 miles of shoreline, the Coast is nestled along the Mississippi Sound, a serene, shallow body of water protected by the barrier islands. A beloved natural treasure, the Mississippi Sound is known for its calm waves and its rich marine life which produces our renowned Gulf seafood. As you enjoy the many tasty possibilities the Coast brings, everyone is encouraged to play a crucial role in preserving this vital habitat.

Many programs are in place to keep our ecosystems healthy and prosperous. One such program is the Mississippi Sound Estuary Program (MSEP), a newly formed entity designed in accordance with the National Estuary Program (NEP) standards. Housed at the Mississippi State University Coastal Research and Extension Center, MSEP is designed to bring together local organizations and community leaders to support community-driven conservation, restoration, and stewardship of the Mississippi Sound and its contributing watersheds. Through increased awareness and engaged participation of supporters, MSEP plays a vital role in shaping the future of the Mississippi Sound and ensuring that it remains a vibrant and thriving ecosystem.
HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO BE A SOUND SUPPORTER, TOO!
• Beach Visits: Take what you brought, including toys and trash, to prevent accidental ingestion by wildlife.
• Fishing Trips: Follow catch limits and size guidelines to ensure our species can maintain its population numbers. Utilize the filament recycling stations provided by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR).
• Dining Breaks: Skip the plastic and forego the straw, select a can over a plastic bottle, and properly dispose of and/or recycle any single-use plastics you utilize.
Using “sound judgments” during your visit will help us all be more proactive and mindful of the environment. Visit the Mississippi Sound Estuary Program (MSEP) at mssoundep.com to find out more ways to show your support!
