WHERE BEAUTY
& growth meet RAISED ON THE FAIRWAYS | Q&A WITH AVERY WEED
CONNECTION TO THE COAST
Q | You grew up playing golf in Coastal Mississippi. What does it mean to you to still call these courses home?
A | It means the world! I always look forward to coming home over the summer and winter breaks to play golf on the Coast for a couple of months. The weather is fantastic, and the variety makes it so enjoyable.
Q | When did you first fall in love with the game, and where on the Coast did that start?
A | I fell in love with the game around 9 years old. This is when I started competitive golf, and I loved every second of it. This started right around the time my family and I moved down to the Coast, where I became a member at Shell Landing.
Q | How did growing up in Ocean Springs shape you as a golfer and as a person?
A | Growing up in Ocean Springs, there were always a lot of kids around to play golf with. At Shell Landing, there have always been lots of adults as well who would want to ask me about my game. This helped me learn how to communicate well and be very sociable. Growing up on the Coast shaped my golf game for different conditions and helped me become a better person.
THE COURSES
Q | What makes golfing in Coastal Mississippi unique, from the conditions to the distinct personalities of courses like The Oaks, The Bridges, Windance, Shell Landing, and Fallen Oak, and how do these courses challenge and improve your game? A | One thing about Coastal Mississippi is that there is pretty much always a constant breeze, which is different from most places I’ve played. Growing up playing many of the different courses along the Coast, I learned something unique from each one. They all test you in different ways—whether it’s pine-lined fairways, marsh and bayou carries, thick rough, or greens with a lot of slope. Some require accurate drives, some demand forced carries over water or marsh, and others challenge you with fast, tricky greens.
Playing in the wind on the Coast has definitely sharpened my game over the years. Learning to control ball trajectory and calculate how the wind will influence each shot has become second nature. Each course presents its own personality and its own challenge, and having to adapt to those differences is what has made me a more well-rounded golfer.
YEAR-ROUND PLAY
Q | What has playing almost year-round, in weather that keeps you on the course, meant for your growth as a golfer?
