It’s a tiny beach town that most have never heard of, but it’s rooted sternly in yacht sailing history. It’s affectionately called “The Pass” by waterfront locals, but it’s also widely known as “The Birthplace of Yachting in the South.” The richly nautical historic town is a prevalent sailing destination and was even a favorite yachting spot of President Theodore Roosevelt. And it should come as no surprise, the town has one of the most stunning harbors on the Coast only to be highlighted by quirky, island-style eateries, beautiful beaches, elite charter fishing, and a carefree friendly local vibe.
Long Beach
This picturesque coastal perch has quickly become an ideal spot for a serene getaway with bicycle-friendly streets, an array of seaside eateries, and one of the most famous historical landmarks in Mississippi – the Friendship Oak. Considered the oldest tree in the Magnolia State, legend has it, those who seek shade under the branches of the 537-year-old tree will remain friends their entire lives.
Gulfport
As the second-largest city in the Magnolia State and the headquarters of Cruisin’ the Coast, Gulfport has much to offer visitors including swimming with dolphins and sea turtles, ferry-piloted tropical island escapes, lounging on endless miles of sugary sandy shoreline, or diving into a myriad of waterparks. And some of the most unique sites aren’t even water-related. Any visit to Gulfport should include a stop at Fishbone Alley. Named one of the “Most Unusual and Enjoyable”
streets in America, the pedestrian-only alley is filled with eateries, bars, and artwork by local artists. Other avoid-the-heat stops include the Traintastic Park & Model Railroad Museum, Mississippi Aquarium, and Lynn Meadows Discovery Center.
D’Iberville
If exploring an unforgettable waterway such as the Tchoutacabouffa River is not your style, there’s always shopping. As the retail shopping capital of the Gulf Coast, travelers can mosey through the countless stores of The Promenade or indulge in local cuisine packed with seafood. And if the kids are hoping for a break from a shopping-packed trip, you can catch a movie or have a laser tag night with the family as there’s a little something for everyone in D’Iberville.
Biloxi
One of the state’s oldest cities, the town offers a perfect mix of history and popular culture while retaining a beachy vibe with the historic Biloxi Lighthouse. As a famous summer tourist destination, the seaside town features miles of beaches, dozens of casinos, countless museums, and award-winning eclectic restaurants and bistros. It’s also home to several notable historic sites, including Beauvoir, which is the former home of Jefferson Davis.
