Today, the hall fosters civic participation in a variety of causes to promote the greater common good, supporting creative expression and activist art for women and men who have struggled to find a mainstream connection due to their social or artistic convictions, or minority status.
Many of us don’t realize the importance of preservation until we see it firsthand in our own communities. Preservation reaches so far beyond simply maintaining a building’s exterior or erecting a plaque to commemorate forgotten culture-bearers —it tells stories, honors legacies, shapes neighborhoods, uplifts communities, and cultivates the next generation of leaders. And it’s especially vital to reach and amplify the voices of artists in even the most rural and isolated places where significant Black history has occurred, which have all too often been overlooked and under recognized for their role in shaping American culture.
