GIVING BACK
The Mental Health Association of South Mississippi (MHASM) values that people deserve to be treated with respect and empathy. Having a mental health diagnosis does not define a person. They are a person living with a mental illness.
The organization facilitates Mental Health First Aid classes.
During the course, attendees learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms that a potential mental health challenge may exist. They learn how to listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to someone who may be experiencing a mental health challenge. As well as how to refer someone to appropriate professional support and services.
According to the National Council for Behavioral Health, a mental disorder or mental illness is a diagnosable illness that:
• Affects a person’s thinking, emotional state, and behavior.
• Disrupts the person’s ability to:
• Work or attend school.
• Conduct daily activities.
• Engage in satisfying relationships.
MHASM operates a Drop-In center for adults with mental illness; connects with unsheltered individuals to provide resources and connection to housing options; provides peer support services and educational opportunities. July 26, 2024, MHASM is hosting their annual event, Don’t Worry Be Happy to raise awareness and funds to continue services.
