When the first legal casino opened on the Coast in 1992, it ushered in a new economic era for South Mississippi. The gaming sector has had a positive impact on the economy, directly and indirectly. Even before gaming facilities opened, jobs were created in construction, building supplies and infrastructure improvements. Thousands of residents and newcomers found work in the industry as well as with vendors supplying the casinos. Gaming taxes, room taxes and dining taxes have meant a tremendous boom for cities and counties.
