Emanuel “Dean” Barnes receives
The Charles Prophet Wagon Master Memorial Award
For his contributions to Alcorn State University and the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s athletic heritage, Emanuel “Dean” Barnes will be honored with the 2017
SWAC Alumni Association Charles “Chuck” Prophet Wagon Master Memorial Award.
e award was presented during the organization’s Legends Reception, held annually on the evening before the SWAC Championship football game.
e award is named in honor of longtime Mississippi Val- ley State University sports information director and athletic director Chuck Prophet. It is presented to an employee of a conference member school who exempli es Chuck’s spirit, dedication, and loyalty to their school and SWAC.
“I knew Chuck and admired both his passion and work for Mississippi Valley. Receiving an award named after him is a special honor,” Barnes said.
Barnes, an alumnus, has worked at Alcorn since 1975. e familiar voice of Alcorn athletics has served as the public ad- dress announcer at Alcorn basketball games for 42 years and football games for 30 years. He’s also the color analyst for radio on the road alongside Charles Edmond of WPRL 91.7 FM, e Gold.
Barnes earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Sci- ence in education from Alcorn. He retired from the university as vice president for student a airs in June.
Prior roles at Alcorn include working as deputy provost for Student Services, director of admissions and recruiting, dean and associate dean of students, admission counselor and re- cruiter, and residence hall director in the Division of Student A airs.
Barnes was enshrined in the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2016.
